Let’s face it, no one ever wakes up in the morning wishing for a horrible day. Learning how to have a productive day can make all the difference in turning your mornings into a positive start.
The fact is, no matter how many quotes you read, mantras you recite, meditations you do or podcasts you listen to – there are two certainties you can count on as your day unfolds:
1) Prepare for the unknown.
2) Your thoughts will directly dictate how you will show up when the unknown arises.
So, I guess the real question is, “what can you do to prepare for the unknown while setting yourself up for a great day?”
People spend so much effort defining and refining daily methods and means, but they rarely consider what success means to them. Authors have written so much about morning rituals, routines, and productivity that you could spend the entire day researching instead of living. People get lost researching mindsets, beliefs, and habits of others, so they don’t work on their own success. Researching can be wonderful, but just like scuba diving, you must come up for air.
- Fact: there is no one fast rule to success here and since each person is unique, so will be what you determine makes your day a success.
No matter what you call “the best” – there are several things you can do to set yourself up for a great day regardless of what life throws at you. The first and most critical is to realize:
How to have a productive day: That you have control over your day no matter what happens.
This statement requires some level of introspection but if you’re still reading this article then good news…you have it. The power of positive thinking has been proven by the Mayo Clinic to alter our moods and as a result our daily experiences. This brings me to the second point worth remembering:
How to have a productive day: Life is a series of choices you make every day and the rest is how you react to them.
“Choices” and “you” are key. You decide how your day goes—not your boss, partner, friend, traffic, or anyone else. It’s all on you.
And that brings me to the one thing that will determine if today will be a great day or one you soon wish to forget. The answer is quite simple and something I have already alluded to throughout this piece.
How to have a productive day: The answer is you.
Planning, systems, habits, and productivity are important, but showing up matters most. Countless articles analyze the habits of successful people, yet they rarely mention the most obvious commonality: They all showed up consistently.
I mean really showed up.
Being present isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.
Regardless of how smart, rich or successful you are – you have to show up. There are people who sort of show up, there are people who rarely show up, and of course the people that never show up.
Here is what I have learned after twenty years of working with people:
- The ones who sort of show up, sort of get what they want.
- The ones who rarely show up, rarely get what they want.
- The ones who never show up, never get what they want.
So I leave you with this:
If you had the possibility of having the best day ever – which version of you is going to show up?
